John (or Johnny, he’s pretty indifferent) Gialanella has earned both a BFA and MFA in Design from Siena Heights University and the University of Arizona, and while he can do a little bit of everything, he’s most comfortable working on strategy, branding, letterpress printing, and book binding. John currently holds the position of Associate Professor of Print Production at Western Washington University.

A Strip of Sandpaper Mounted to a Broken Thermometer
An artists’ book created with personal photographs, collaged and found images, and text. The case bound book intertwines the stories of my grandfather’s WWII desert training in Hyder AZ and my visit to the same location nearly 70 years later.

Pardoned Me
An artists’ book accordion bound with gate folds that is a tongue and cheek comparison of each President’s pardon of a Thanksgiving turkey and their most controversial pardon of a convicted felon, political friend, or wealthy donor.

Shepard Font
My first exploration into type design. Self-learning what I could from video tutorials, message boards, and the Instagram lessons shared by Grilli Type and James OH no Type Co., I set out to try my hand at making a typeface inspired by the mid-century space race while learning Glyphs along the way. It’s certainly wonky and without doubt full of mistakes and unintentionally poor construction, but I’ve definitely been bit by the type bug.
